Big Fiddle and Old Sydney on foot

  1. Step off at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion and take your photo at the Big Fiddle, a 60-foot steel fiddle and bow right beside it.
  2. Browse the vendors inside the pavilion and the shops and boardwalk eateries by the fiddle for gifts and Cape Breton food.
  3. Head into the North End heritage district to see Cossit House (1787), Jost House and St. Patrick's, the oldest Catholic church in Cape Breton. The port's walking map helps you plan the route.

Ship tour or go independent?

Sydney itself is easy on your own: the Big Fiddle and the town's historic sites are a walk from the pavilion. The headline sights are farther out, and there is no rideshare on Cape Breton, so a booked tour is the simplest way to reach Louisbourg, Baddeck or the Cabot Trail. Booking your own tour gives you more choice and the chance to match the tour length to your call. The ship's version suits anyone who would rather leave the timing to the cruise line. Browse the tours and use the time-ashore filter to find a fit.

  • Uber and Lyft don't operate on Cape Breton. Taxis are phone-dispatched, so arrange your ride back ahead of time if you go on your own.
  • Sydney has a second cruise berth built for the largest ships. If your ship uses it, ask the cruise line how to get to the pavilion and allow extra time.
  • Louisbourg closes at 5 p.m. In peak season (to September 11 in 2026) the last site bus to the reconstructed town leaves at 4:30 p.m. Pick a tour that goes early if your call is short.
  • After September 11 there is no site shuttle at Louisbourg; cars drive in through Gate 2 and tour buses can drop off at the reconstructed town, so a booked tour is the easier fall option.
  • Weather can change fast on the highland plateau and along the coast. Pack an extra layer.
