Ship tour or go independent?

Kingstown is an easy port to do on your own. Ships dock in town, the tourism authority publishes a list of approved taxi operators, and the government sets taxi fares from the cruise berth. For the parrot trail, the waterfalls or the volcano, booking your own tour gives you more choice and often a smaller group. The ship's tours suit anyone who would rather leave the timing to the cruise line, especially for long trips up the coast.

  • Dark View Falls is about 1.5 hours' drive each way. Pick a tour that clearly fits your time ashore.
  • The La Soufrière Windward trailhead is about 1 hour 20 minutes from Kingstown, and the climb to the crater takes about 2 hours up. Foreign visitors need a certified guide unless they hike with Vincentian nationals.
  • Ferry times to Bequia vary by operator and day of the week, with fewer sailings on Sundays. Check the return sailing against all-aboard before you go.
  • Heavy rain can cause flash floods in the mountains. Check the weather before a hike or waterfall trip.
  • Taxi fares are higher after hours, and return trips cost double the one-way fare. Agree on the fare before you set off.
