Roseau in a nutshell

Worth getting off?

Research verdictGet off the ship

Ships dock in downtown Roseau, so the old town, the craft market and the Botanic Gardens are all in town. The bigger reason to get off is nature: Trafalgar Falls, Emerald Pool, the Sulphur Springs and the bubbling Champagne Reef are each a ride away.

Plan your day

4hours ashore

Old Roseau, the market and the Botanic Gardens

  1. Walk off the ship into town. The Dominica Museum is right across from the berth, and the visitor information center is in the Old Post Office.
  2. Browse the craft vendors at Old Market Square, the oldest part of town and once the island's slave market.
  3. Wander streets of 18th-century French-style buildings toward the New Market on the riverbank for fresh fruit and herbs.
  4. Finish in the 40-acre Botanic Gardens. Look for the bus still pinned under a baobab tree, left there by Hurricane David in 1979.
  5. Want a waterfall too? Use the time-ashore filter to see which Trafalgar Falls tours fit a 4-hour stop.

6hours ashore

Trafalgar Falls and a Champagne Reef snorkel

  1. Start with Trafalgar Falls in the Roseau Valley. Park at the visitor center; a 10-minute walk takes you to the viewing platform for the twin falls.
  2. Head down the southwest coast to Champagne Reef, where bubbles from volcanic vents rise through the water, and snorkel among sponges, turtles and reef fish.
  3. If there's time, soak in the warm pools at the Soufriere Sulphur Springs, about a mile inland from Soufriere village.
  4. Budget for site passes; Trafalgar Falls and the Sulphur Springs are both on the pass list.
  5. A small-group tour that combines the falls and the reef is the easy way to do this. Browse the tours and pick one that fits your time ashore.

8hours ashore

Into the national park: Emerald Pool and Freshwater Lake

  1. Book a full-day tour into Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  2. Walk the 3/4-mile loop trail to Emerald Pool, a 40-foot waterfall with a pool for wading and swimming. It's the park's most accessible trail.
  3. Or go high: Freshwater Lake sits at about 2,500 feet, near Laudat, and is the source of the Roseau River.
  4. The Forestry Division's US$20 day pass covers all eco-sites except the Waitukubuli National Trail, so it pays off once you visit three sites at US$8 each.
  5. Leave plenty of time to get back to the pier before all-aboard. Use the time-ashore filter to find a tour that fits.

Ship tour or go independent?

Roseau is an easy place to do your own thing. You walk off the ship into town, and licensed taxis are available in Roseau. Booking your own tour gives you more choice, often smaller groups, and the chance to mix a waterfall with a snorkel stop at your own pace. The ship's tours suit anyone who would rather leave the timing to the cruise line, and they're worth a look if your ship docks at Cabrits, at the island's northern end. Browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits.

  • Taxis aren't metered. Agree on the fare before you set off and use a licensed taxi.
  • Most nature sites charge a site pass for non-residents. Budget for it, and check whether your tour price covers it.
  • Some roads are narrow and in poor shape, and landslides can follow bad weather. Pick a tour with a sensible return time and allow a cushion.
  • Rivers can flash flood. Skip swimming at waterfalls while it's raining.
  • If your ship uses Woodbridge Bay instead of the downtown berth, check where your tour picks you up.

FAQ

Roseau cruise port FAQ

Can I walk from the cruise ship into Roseau?

Yes, from the main berth. The Roseau Cruise Ship Berth is across from the Dominica Museum, so you walk straight into town. The government says big Princess ships can only dock at Woodbridge Bay, about 2 km north of Roseau, so check your berth and your tour's pickup point.

Do I need a pass to visit Trafalgar Falls or Emerald Pool?

Yes. Non-residents need a site pass for the national parks and eco-sites, including Trafalgar Falls, Emerald Pool and the Sulphur Springs. The Forestry Division lists US$8 for one site, US$20 for a day pass, or US$50 for a week. Other official pages show different prices, so confirm at the visitor center, and check whether your tour price covers it.

Can I pay in US dollars?

Yes. US dollars are accepted across the island, and the EC dollar is pegged at EC$2.70 to US$1. Most tour operators and restaurants also take major cards.

How do taxis work in Dominica?

Taxis aren't metered but have standard fares for most trips. Look for an H, HA or HB plate and agree the price before you get in. A tour is often simpler if you want to see several sites in one day; browse the tours and filter by your time ashore.

Is Dominica safe for cruise visitors?

The US State Department rates Dominica Level 1, its lowest advisory level. Use licensed taxis, keep valuables out of sight, and take care in the sea and on rivers after rain.

Can I snorkel at Champagne Reef on a port day?

Yes. It's on the southwest coast at the northern tip of the Soufriere–Scotts Head Marine Reserve, and Discover Dominica lists it as a cruise day trip. Browse the tours and pick one that fits your time ashore with room to spare.

Is this the Dominican Republic?

No. Dominica is a separate English-speaking island nation in the Eastern Caribbean, with its own currency, the EC dollar. Roseau is its capital.
