Castries in a nutshell

Worth getting off?

Research verdictGet off the ship

Ships dock right in Castries harbor, so the capital's square, cathedral and market are an easy walk. The Pitons and the drive-in volcano are near Soufrière on the southwest coast, reached on narrow, winding roads, so a Soufrière day needs a tour or a booked driver.

  3. Browse Castries Market for fruit, spices and fresh juices. Saturday mornings are the busiest.
  4. Take a taxi up to Morne Fortune for free entry to the old fort grounds and a view over the harbor.

  2. Ride down the west coast on narrow, winding roads to Soufrière.
  3. Walk past steaming vents at Sulphur Springs, the drive-in volcano, and try the warm mud baths if your tour includes them.
  4. Stop at Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens and take in the Pitons, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  5. Start back early. This is the longest trip on the island and leaves little room for delays. Use the time-ashore filter in the tours list to find a Soufrière tour that fits.

Ship tour or go independent?

Castries itself is easy to do on your own on foot, and licensed taxis can be hailed at taxi stands or booked by phone. Pigeon Island is a simple taxi trip too. For Soufrière and the Pitons, the drive is long and the coast road is narrow and slow, so plan on a booked tour or a pre-arranged taxi tour. Booking your own gives you more choice, smaller groups and often a lower price than the ship's version; the ship's tours suit anyone who would rather leave the timing to the cruise line on a long day.

  • Taxis have no meters, so agree on the fare, and the currency, before you get in.
  • The west coast road to Soufrière is narrow, with sharp turns and climbs, so allow extra time.
  • Pigeon Island may close for work in September and during set-up for the Saint Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival from part of April to the end of May.
  • On a busy day up to five ships can be in port, so sights and taxis get crowded. Book ahead and start early.
  • Demonstrations, when they happen, are usually in Castries near Parliament or the public squares. Avoid them.
