Piraeus in a nutshell

Worth getting off?

Research verdictGet off the ship

Piraeus is the gateway to Athens, home of the Acropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The port itself is a working harbor, so the day is about getting into the city and back with time to spare. A tour with pickup at the port takes the logistics off your plate.

Plan

Plan your day

Pick the plan that matches your time ashore, then check how far things are from the pier.

4hours ashore

Acropolis Museum, then straight back

  1. This is a tight call. The ride into central Athens and back uses a good part of it, so pick one or two stops.
  2. Take Metro Line 1 from Piraeus toward the center. Lines 2 and 3 connect to Line 1 at Monastiraki and Omonia, and the Acropolis Museum is by Akropoli station on Line 2.
  3. The Acropolis Museum is open from 9 a.m. every day it is open, so a morning visit is possible.
  4. Head back with extra time before all-aboard. A small-group tour that picks up at the port is worth a look if you want the stops chosen for you.

6hours ashore

Acropolis and museum, by metro or with a guide

  1. Ride Line 1 toward central Athens and change to Line 2 or 3 as needed.
  2. Visit the Acropolis, then the Acropolis Museum nearby. The museum ticket is separate from the Acropolis site ticket.
  3. Check current Acropolis hours, prices and entry rules on the official Greek ticket site before you go.
  4. Allow extra time to return to the pier. Browse independent tours with port pickup and use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits.

8hours ashore

Acropolis, museum and Panathenaic Stadium

  1. Start early with the Acropolis, then walk to the Acropolis Museum.
  2. The Panathenaic Stadium is open 8 a.m.–7 p.m. from March to October. It is about 1,000 m from the Akropoli, Syntagma and Evangelismos metro stations.
  3. Leave plenty of time for the return to the pier. A private or small-group tour covers more ground with fewer transfers, so compare a few before you choose.

Ship tour or go independent?

Athens is a big city, and the pier is a ride from the sights. Booking your own tour gives you more choice, often a smaller group, and a day at your own pace, and many independent tours pick you up at the port. The ship's excursions are a fair pick for a short call or if you would rather leave the timing to the cruise line. Browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits.

  • Piraeus is not a walkable port. Allow for the ride to central Athens and back.
  • Pick a tour or plan that finishes with a comfortable margin before all-aboard.
  • Check the Acropolis hours and ticket rules for your date before you go.
  • Demonstrations in Athens can disrupt transportation, per the US State Department, so keep your plan flexible and leave time to get back.
