Research verdictGet off the ship

Ships anchor in the caldera, below the cliff-top town of Fira. It is one of the best-known island views in the Mediterranean, but plan for the landing queues, the climb to town and an island with sights spread out, so a short call goes to Fira alone.

Best time to go

Cruise calls run almost all year; the port publishes monthly schedules from September 2026 to August 2027. In October 2026 it lists 83 calls, most arriving between 7:00 and 8:30 a.m. and leaving in the evening.

The municipality calls spring mild and fewer crowds from April, with hot weather June to October and July and August the peak. The cable car runs shorter hours in winter.

Plan

Plan your day

Pick the plan that matches your time ashore, then check how far things are from the pier.

4hours ashore

Fira on the caldera rim

  1. Go ashore at the Fira anchorage below the town. Allow time for the landing queue, which is part of any anchored-ship day.
  2. Ride the cable car up (3 to 5 minutes) or climb the 587 steps. A donkey is the third way up.
  3. Walk Fira's caldera edge for the view over the volcano, and look into its chapels and cave houses.
  4. Visit the Museum of Prehistoric Thera or the Archaeological Museum, then try fava or tomato fritters at a cafe.
  5. Head back down with a generous cushion for the cable car and the boat line to your ship.

6hours ashore

Fira and Oia by bus

  1. Go ashore, ride the cable car up and take a quick look around Fira.
  2. Catch the KTEL bus from Fira to Oia. The bus runs from Fira's bus station and is the budget route.
  3. In Oia, walk the village of white, ochre and pink buildings, cave houses and captains' mansions, with the castle area and the Maritime Museum.
  4. Take the bus back to Fira and allow extra time for cable car and boat queues. If you would rather not manage the buses, browse the island tours below and use the time-ashore filter for a half-day that fits.

8hours ashore

Akrotiri, wine and the volcano

  1. Pick an island tour or arrange your own ride from Fira to Akrotiri, the Bronze Age town buried by volcanic ash. Booking your own island tour can give you more choice and smaller groups, at your own pace.
  2. Taste Assyrtiko white wine, the island's signature grape, at a winery.
  3. If you would rather be on the water, boats to the volcano and hot springs of Nea Kameni leave from the bay of Fira. Check the tour length against your all-aboard time.
  4. Whichever you choose, leave extra time for the ride back and the boat line. Browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits your call.

Ship tour or go independent?

Santorini works well on your own if you pick a day that matches your time ashore. Booking an independent island tour or caldera boat trip gives you more choice, smaller groups and the pace you want. The ship's own excursions are a good fit for short calls and anchored-ship days, or for anyone who would rather leave the logistics and timing to the cruise line. Browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits your call.

  • Ships anchor in the caldera, so allow time for boat queues at both ends of the day, and plan a cushion for the ride back.
  • Which landing your ship uses can differ: the port says ships are served by both Athinios and the Fira anchorage. Confirm where your ship lands before booking a tour, and set your meeting point to match.
  • From the Fira anchorage the ways up to town are the cable car, the 587 steps or a donkey. Allow time for the cable car queue on the way back down.
  • Santorini's sights are spread out: the KTEL table lists 7 to 20 km from Fira to its main stops. Pick a tour that leaves a cushion before all-aboard, and check how long it runs against your time ashore.
  • The cable car runs shorter hours from November to March, with a midday pause. Check its timetable if you call in the low season.

Official advisoryUS State Dept: Level 1 — Exercise normal precautions (as of October 23, 2025)

  • The advisory flags wildfires in southern and island regions, frequent from April to October.
  • Medical help in rural areas can take longer to arrive, which matters on a long island day.
  • The advisory advises avoiding demonstrations. It names protest areas in Athens and Thessaloniki, not the islands.

From official government and port sources. Check the latest advisory before you travel.

FAQ

Santorini cruise port FAQ

Do cruise ships dock at Santorini?

They anchor in the caldera rather than dock. The port says ships are served by the Athinios port and the Fira anchorage. Ask your cruise line which landing your ship uses, and match your tour meeting point to it.

How do I get from the port up to Fira?

From the Fira anchorage you can take the cable car (3 to 5 minutes), climb 587 steps or ride a donkey. The operator's 2025 list shows €10 one way for adults. Browse the tours below if you would rather have transfers handled.

Is there a cruise passenger fee in Greece?

Yes. Under a 2025 decision, Greece charges a levy per disembarking passenger, per port. At Santorini it is €20 from June to September, €12 in April, May and October, and €4 from November to March. The cruise company and its agent file and pay it, so check your cruise terms to see whether it is already included.

Is there a limit on cruise passengers at Santorini?

The port's berthing policy for 2025 and 2026 says passengers should not exceed 8,000 on any single day. For 2026 the policy counts each ship at its full passenger capacity.

Can I get to Oia on my own?

Yes. KTEL buses run from Fira to Oia for €2.20 per the May 2026 price table. Allow extra time to return to Fira, the cable car and the boat to your ship. An independent island tour is another way to see Oia without the bus.

What should I eat?

Try Santorini fava, tomato fritters, white eggplant and chloro cheese. The island's Assyrtiko is a crisp white wine.

Is Santorini safe for cruise visitors?

The US State Department rates Greece Level 1, its lowest advisory level. It flags wildfires on the islands from April to October, so follow local guidance if smoke or fire is nearby.

Do I need euros?

Greece uses the euro. Bus fares and other small costs are quoted in euros.
