Plan your day

Pick the plan that matches your time ashore, then check how far things are from the pier.

4hours ashore

Hip Strip and a swim at Doctor's Cave

  1. Take a licensed taxi about 10 minutes to the Hip Strip on Gloucester Avenue. Agree on the fare before you get in.
  2. Swim at Doctor's Cave Beach, a shallow, gentle beach in the middle of the strip. It opens daily at 8:30 a.m., and you can rent snorkel gear there.
  3. Walk the strip for a jerk lunch or a patty, then taxi back with a good time cushion.

6hours ashore

Rose Hall Great House, then the beach

  1. Take a taxi to Rose Hall Great House for the day and garden tour. It runs Monday to Saturday from 9:15 a.m.; the house is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
  2. The tour takes about 45 minutes to an hour and tells the story of Annie Palmer, the White Witch of Rose Hall.

8hours ashore

River or waterfall day

  1. Book a tour inland. The tourism board describes Montpelier Estate's waterfall hike, ziplining and tubing on the Great River; it is not on the reopening list, so check it is running. Use the time-ashore filter in the tours list to find one that fits.
  2. Martha Brae bamboo rafting is about 20 miles from Montego Bay, inland from Falmouth, but the tourism board listed it as closed when we checked. Confirm it is running before you book.
  3. Dunn's River Falls is listed as open, but it is in Ocho Rios, not Montego Bay. Pick a tour that builds in the drive both ways.
  4. Finish with a stroll through Sam Sharpe Square downtown if time allows.

Ship tour or go independent?

Montego Bay is easy to do your own way. The beach, the Hip Strip and Rose Hall are short taxi rides, and Uber works in Montego Bay. For rivers, waterfalls and anything farther out, an independent tour with pickup gives you more choice and often smaller groups than the ship's version. The ship's tours suit anyone who would rather leave the timing to the cruise line. Browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter to find ones that fit your day.

  • Taxis are not metered. Use licensed JUTA taxis with red-and-white PP plates, agree on the fare first, and don't share with strangers.
  • Some Montego Bay attractions were still closed after Hurricane Melissa, as listed by the tourism board, including Martha Brae rafting and Greenwood Great House. Check that your tour is running when you book.
  • Rose Hall Great House is closed on Sundays and public holidays, so plan around it if your ship calls then.
  • Dunn's River Falls is in Ocho Rios, not Montego Bay. Pick a tour that ends well before all-aboard.
  • Canada warns that authorities may search cruise passengers for drugs when they leave Montego Bay by ship.

Getting around

Getting around & money

Getting around

Rideshare available

  • TaxiThe usual way off the pier. Use licensed taxis: JUTA tourist taxis have red-and-white PP plates and a lime-green JUTA sticker. Taxis are not metered. The Transport Authority regulates fares, but we found no published fare from the pier, so agree on the price before you go. The Hip Strip is about a 10-minute drive.
  • RideshareThe US State Department says Uber is mainly available in the big tourist areas, Montego Bay among them. Check that the driver and plate match the app.
  • BusCanada advises against city buses. Route taxis and coaster minibuses are licensed by the Transport Authority, and Knutsford Express coaches link Montego Bay with other towns, but for a port day a taxi or tour is simpler.

Uber is mainly available in tourist areas including Montego Bay, per the US State Department. Licensed taxis are still the most common choice from the pier.

Money, tipping & phones

Money
The Jamaican dollar (JMD) is the local currency, and exchange rates change daily. Banks and licensed cambios are in all resort areas. Most cash machines take Visa, Mastercard, Cirrus and Plus cards. Use machines inside banks or businesses and watch for card fraud.
Phones
International phone service works around the clock and Wi-Fi is easy to find. Check with your carrier about a roaming plan before you sail.
