Greenock in a nutshell

Worth getting off?

Research verdictDepends what you like

Ships tie up at the Ocean Terminal in Greenock, a working port town on the Firth of Clyde. Glasgow, with its free museums and medieval cathedral, is roughly 35 to 40 minutes away by train, so most people head there or out to Loch Lomond. Stay local if you only want a quiet walk and a museum.

Plan your day

Pick the plan that matches your time ashore, then check how far things are from the pier.

4hours ashore

Greenock on foot

  1. Step off at the Ocean Terminal and look in at the visitor centre, which holds a museum for the artist George Wyllie, a gallery and a restaurant with a roof terrace over the Clyde.
  2. Ask the Inverclyde Tourist Group volunteers in tartan vests on the quayside or in the terminal hall for a free map and a printed self-guided walk.
  3. Walk to the Custom House, built in 1818, and its quay, where the paddle steamer Waverley calls.
  4. If your call falls on a Wednesday to Saturday, visit the free McLean Museum in the Watt Institution (10 a.m.–4 p.m.), then head back well before all-aboard.

6hours ashore

Glasgow by train, the short version

  1. Walk about 10 minutes from the berth to Greenock Central station and buy a ticket to Glasgow Central. The ride takes about 35 to 40 minutes, depending on the source.
  2. Visit Glasgow Cathedral, free to enter. It is a working church, so check the day's times first.
  3. Add Kelvingrove or the Riverside Museum, both free, or a hop-on-hop-off city bus. Browse the Glasgow tours below and use the time-ashore filter to see which ones fit your call.
  4. Leave plenty of time for the train back to Greenock and the walk to the ship.

8hours ashore

Loch Lomond and Luss, or a longer Glasgow day

  1. Browse Loch Lomond tours and check each one's pickup point and total length. Booking your own tour lets you pick a smaller group and a pace you like; use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits. We could not find a published Greenock-to-loch drive time.
  2. Luss is a well-kept village on the loch's western shore, with a pier, a long beach, short walks and cafés.
  3. Or spend the day in Glasgow instead: the Cathedral and Necropolis in the morning, then a free museum such as Kelvingrove after lunch.
  4. Ship tours are a good fit if you would rather leave the timing to the cruise line.

Ship tour or go independent?

Greenock is simple to do independently if you stay local or take the train to Glasgow: passengers step straight onto the pier, the station is about a 10-minute walk, and local volunteers hand out maps. For Loch Lomond or a guided Glasgow day, a small-group or private tour often gives you more choice and a flexible pace. The ship's tours suit anyone who would rather leave the timing to the cruise line. Browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits your call.

  • Greenock is not a city center. Glasgow is about 25 miles away, so allow for the train both ways and time to walk back to the ship.
  • Train frequency and Sunday timetables differ from Monday to Saturday, so check the ScotRail timetable for your call day.
  • Glasgow Cathedral and the museums have set hours and close in the late afternoon, so plan your return before they shut.
  • If you book a Loch Lomond tour, check the pickup point and the total length, and leave time before all-aboard.
