Cobh in a nutshell

Worth getting off?

Research verdictGet off the ship

Ships at the Cobh berth tie up beside the town, so the Titanic and emigration sights are close to the gangway. Cork city, Blarney Castle and the Midleton distillery add choice for a longer day, which is where booking your own tour can help.

4hours ashore

Cobh on foot

  1. Step off onto the quay beside the Cobh Heritage Centre, which tells the story of Irish emigration and is open 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. daily.
  2. Visit Titanic Experience Cobh in Casement Square. Allow at least an hour; book ahead, as walk-in tickets depend on availability.
  3. Climb to St. Colman's Cathedral, which the tourism board suggests allowing half an hour to an hour for, and listen for its 49-bell carillon.
  4. Stroll the Promenade and leave plenty of time to be back at the ship.

6hours ashore

Cobh, then the train to Cork city

  1. Spend the morning at the Titanic Experience or the Heritage Centre, then walk to the station opposite the cruise terminal.
  2. Take the train to Cork Kent Station, about 25 minutes. Weekday trains leave Cobh at half past the hour.
  3. Walk to the English Market, the city's covered food market, created in 1788, for a look at the fish, bakery, deli and meat stalls.
  4. Return trains leave Cork on the hour on weekdays. Pick one that leaves well before all-aboard.

8hours ashore

Blarney Castle, or the Midleton distillery

  1. For Blarney, the castle is about 8 km northwest of Cork city. Allow about 3 hours to see the castle and gardens. A cruise-day tour handles the transport; use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits your call.
  2. Prefer whiskey? The Midleton Distillery tour runs 75 minutes, and the distillery suggests allowing up to 2 hours with a tasting and the shop.
  3. Either way, build in a buffer for the trip back to Cobh before all-aboard.
  4. If time is left, spend it at the Cobh waterfront and cathedral.

Ship tour or go independent?

Cobh is easy to do on your own: the berth is beside the town, the Titanic and emigration sights are in town, and a train line runs from opposite the terminal to Cork. Booking your own tour gives you more choice, often smaller groups, and the pace you want, especially for Blarney, Midleton or Cork city. The ship's own tours suit anyone who would rather leave the timing to the cruise line. Browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits your call.

  • Allow time for the train to Cork and back. The line runs hourly on weekdays, with extra trains usually added for large ships, so pick a return that leaves a cushion.
  • Some ships berth at Ringaskiddy instead of Cobh, which adds a taxi, a ferry and a short walk to the train. Check which berth your ship uses.
  • Titanic Experience Cobh tickets are non-changeable and walk-in places depend on availability, so book ahead and arrive at least 15 minutes early.
  • Pick a tour that lists its return time, and leave a buffer before all-aboard.
