Worth getting off?

Research verdictGet off the ship

The tourist office describes cruise ships at anchor off Villefranche, with shuttle boats to the old town, which has narrow stairs and cobbled streets. Nice is a short train ride away and Monaco is on the same line, so one call can be a quiet village morning or a bigger day out.

4hours ashore

Villefranche old town and the Cocteau chapel

  1. Tender ashore and wander the harbor front and the old town, where narrow stairs and the vaulted Rue Obscure give the village its look.
  2. Visit the Saint-Pierre chapel on Quai Courbet, decorated inside and out by Jean Cocteau in 1956–57. It is open Wednesday to Sunday, and entry starts at €4.
  3. Walk up to the 16th-century Citadelle Saint-Elme, home to the Volti and Goetz-Boumeester museums.
  4. Leave time to queue for the tender back. A small-group walking or food tour is an easy way to cover the village with a local guide; browse the tours and use the time-ashore filter.

6hours ashore

Villefranche plus Old Nice by train

  1. Walk to Villefranche-sur-Mer station and take the TER to Nice. The operator lists 60 round trips a day, and the ride takes about 5 minutes on average. A one-way ticket is €3.60.
  2. Explore Old Nice, with its narrow alleys and colorful façades, and the Cours Saleya fruit, vegetable and flower market. Socca makes a quick bite in Old Nice.
  3. Climb the steps of Castle Hill for views over Nice and the Baie des Anges, or stroll the Promenade des Anglais.
  4. Train back to Villefranche with time in hand for the tender line. A Nice food or walking tour can save you planning; check the tour length against your time ashore.

8hours ashore

Monaco by train, then Villefranche

  1. Take the TER from Villefranche toward Monaco. Check the timetable on the TER site; the Nice–Monaco ride alone takes about 23 minutes, so allow time on the way.
  2. At Monaco Monte-Carlo station, the station is underground with several exits, one of them signed for Monaco-Ville (La Condamine). The Prince's Palace holds its changing of the guard daily at 11:55 on the Place du Palais.
  3. Visit the Oceanographic Museum (adult €22.50). Its Mediterranean aquarium section is closed from September 1, 2026 for about two years; check what is open before you go.
  4. Take the train back and spend the last hour in Villefranche. A Monaco half-day tour can handle the transfers and give you a guide; use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits.

Ship tour or go independent?

Villefranche is easy to do on your own. The village is small, TER trains to Nice run all day, and Monaco is on the same rail line. Booking your own tour gives you more choice, often smaller groups and your own pace, whether that is a Nice food walk, a Monaco and Èze day or a Riviera drive. The ship's excursions suit anyone who would rather leave the timing to the cruise line, especially on a short call, since every trip starts with a tender. Browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits.

  • Ships anchor in the bay, so every trip ashore and back is by tender. Allow extra time for the queue, especially on a day with two ships.
  • For Nice or Monaco by train, plan to be back at the tender landing well before all-aboard. Check the TER timetable for your return.
  • Pick a tour that starts near the tender landing and gives a clear return time.
  • Check opening days before you go: the Cocteau chapel lists hours for Wednesday to Sunday only and closes from mid-November to mid-December.
