Plan

Plan your day

4hours ashore

Basseterre on foot

  1. Walk off the pier into downtown Basseterre. Port Zante is where the old town meets land reclaimed from the bay.
  2. Stop at the National Museum in the old Treasury Building (weekdays, US$10 for visitors).
  3. Walk on to The Circus, the hub of town, with the 1883 Berkeley Memorial clock and fountain.
  4. Finish at Independence Square, the old Pall Mall Square, then browse the open-air shops at Port Zante on the way back.

6hours ashore

Brimstone Hill Fortress and a beach

  1. Take a licensed taxi from the pier to Brimstone Hill. The 2021 government fare allows a maximum of 2 hours.
  2. Explore the fortress, built by enslaved Africans on a steep volcanic hill that rises about 755 feet. Entry is US$15 for visitors.
  3. Back in town, ride a taxi to Frigate Bay or the South East Peninsula beaches for a swim.
  4. Agree the fare and pickup time before you go, and leave plenty of time to get back to the ship.

8hours ashore

Full island loop, or a day on Nevis

  1. Hire a taxi for the official full-island tour (4–4½ hours). It takes in historic Basseterre, Brimstone Hill, Black Rocks and the Timothy Hill lookout.
  2. Or ride the St. Kitts Scenic Railway, about 3 hours around the island by narrow-gauge train and bus. Book through your ship and check it is running on your date.
  3. Or take the passenger ferry from Basseterre to Charlestown on Nevis (25–45 minutes each way). Check the day's sailing times first.
  4. Leave a generous cushion. The ship will not wait for a late taxi or ferry.

Ship tour or go independent?

Going on your own is easy for town, the fortress and the beaches. Port Zante is one of the set areas where licensed taxis work, and the government sets maximum fares. A ship tour makes most sense for the Scenic Railway, which mostly sells seats through the cruise lines, and for Nevis if you'd rather not manage ferry times yourself.

  • Taxis have no meters. Agree the fare, the currency and the return time before you get in.
  • The official Brimstone Hill fare allows up to 2 hours. Agree with the driver what happens if you stay longer.
  • Nevis ferry schedules vary. Check the day's times and leave a wide margin for the trip back.
  • The Scenic Railway runs several trips a day from November to April but fewer from May to October. It is usually booked through your ship.
  • ATMs are often out of order and can charge high fees, so bring some cash.
