Frederiksted in a nutshell

Worth getting off?

Research verdictGet off the ship

Most ships tie up right in Frederiksted, so you can walk off into a small, colorful historic town with a fort, shops and a beach about a mile up the shore. Bigger trips, like Christiansted or Buck Island, take more planning because they are on the other side of the island.

Plan

Plan your day

Pick the plan that matches your time ashore, then check how far things are from the pier.

4hours ashore

Frederiksted on foot and a beach swim

  1. Walk off the pier into the center of Frederiksted. Shops, restaurants and the visitor center are close to the pier entrance.
  2. Stroll Strand Street along the water and look at the colonial buildings painted in coral, mint and yellow.
  3. See Fort Frederik, the red-brick Danish fort just north of the pier. A three-year restoration was due to start around the turn of 2026, so check that it is open.
  4. Head about a mile north to Rainbow Beach for calm water. Bring sunscreen, since shade is scarce.
  5. Leave plenty of time to get back through the security checkpoint at the pier, where you will need your ID. The ship will not wait.

6hours ashore

Estate Whim and the West End

  1. Take a taxi from the pier to the Estate Whim Museum, a sugar plantation museum on Centerline Road. It opens 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday and on cruise ship days.
  2. Tour the Great House, the workers' quarters and the mill complex.
  3. Return to Frederiksted for lunch and a walk along the waterfront.
  4. Finish with a swim at Rainbow Beach or La Grange Beach, both facing west.

8hours ashore

Christiansted or Buck Island

  1. For history, go across the island to Christiansted. VITRAN buses leave Frederiksted about every 2.5 hours (first at 5:45 a.m.) and take about 75 minutes. A taxi is the other option.
  2. Visit Fort Christiansvaern ($10, under-16s free) and the Scale House, Steeple Building and other buildings of Christiansted National Historic Site.
  3. Or book a Buck Island snorkel trip. Boats leave from the Christiansted waterfront or Green Cay Marina, and the boat ride to the island takes 40 minutes to 1.5 hours.
  4. Because of the distances, a booked tour with transport from the pier is the simplest way to do Buck Island on a port day. Pick one that ends at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.
  5. If you take the bus back, the afternoon buses leave Christiansted at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and are timed to reach Frederiksted at 2:15 and 5:15 p.m.

Ship tour or go independent?

Frederiksted itself is easy on your own: you walk off the pier into town, and the nearest beach is about a mile away. For Christiansted, Buck Island or an island loop, a ship tour or a booked independent tour saves time, because the bus is slow and taxi fares are not posted online.

  • Christiansted is on the far side of the island. The public bus takes 75 minutes or more each way and runs only about every 2.5 hours.
  • VITRAN buses need the exact $2 fare and give no change.
  • There is no current official taxi rate sheet online. Agree on the fare before you ride.
  • Buck Island trips leave from Christiansted or Green Cay Marina, not from Frederiksted. Hiring any boat other than an authorized concessioner for Buck Island is illegal.
  • The pier is a restricted port facility. When a ship is in, only passengers and crew with ID get through security, and swimming or snorkeling around the pier is not allowed.
  • Larger ships anchor in the outer harbor and use tenders, which adds time to getting on and off.

Accessibility

At the pier
Ships dock at the Ann E. Abramson Pier, which is 1,526 feet long, so expect a long walk to the town end. Public restrooms are near the pier entrance. The port authority does not publish step-free or wheelchair details.
Tender
When a ship anchors in the outer harbor instead of docking, passengers come ashore by tender at the pier's tender landings. The expanded south landing reopened on March 4, 2026, joining the north landing. Ask your ship whether tenders can take wheelchairs.
  • Visitors with a permanent disability can get a free NPS Access Pass, which covers entry to Fort Christiansvaern.
  • On Buck Island, vehicles are banned except wheelchairs.
  • The planned Fort Frederik restoration includes accessibility improvements.

FAQ

Frederiksted cruise port FAQ

Where do cruise ships dock on St. Croix?

At the Ann E. Abramson Pier in the center of Frederiksted, on the island's west end. It is St. Croix's only cruise port. Larger ships anchor in the outer harbor and bring passengers in by tender.

Can I walk into town from the ship?

Yes. The pier is in the heart of Frederiksted, with shops and restaurants within walking distance. The pier is long, so allow time for the walk and the security check.

How much is a taxi from the Frederiksted pier?

Fares are regulated by zone, but the VI Taxicab Commission publishes no rate sheet online. Ask the driver for the price before you go.

Can I get to Christiansted on my own?

Yes. Take a taxi, or the VITRAN bus from downtown Frederiksted. The bus costs $2 in exact change and takes about 75 minutes, with about 2.5 hours between buses. The schedule doesn't say which days it runs.

Do I need a passport?

US citizens don't need a passport for the US Virgin Islands, but you must be able to prove citizenship. Non-US citizens need a passport.

Can I snorkel off the Frederiksted Pier?

Not while a cruise ship is docked; swimming and snorkeling around the pier are not allowed then. The port authority also asks swimmers and divers to stay at least 400 feet from the cruise pier because ship engines are often running. Pick a beach like Rainbow Beach instead.

How do I get to Buck Island?

Only by boat with an authorized concessioner, leaving from Christiansted or Green Cay Marina. The ride takes 40 minutes to 1.5 hours. There is no park entry fee.
