Arrecife in a nutshell

Worth getting off?

Research verdictGet off the ship

Arrecife is a small island capital, and the big draws are volcano and César Manrique sights elsewhere on Lanzarote. Booking your own island tour gives you more choice and a pace you set. Plan around the timed tickets that Timanfaya and Cueva de los Verdes require.

4hours ashore

Arrecife old town and a castle

  1. Ride from the quay into the center. The port authority and Spain's tourism board publish no walking time, so check your ship's guide for the quay you are using.
  2. Stroll around the Charco de San Ginés, a seawater lagoon in the city center that César Manrique remodeled.
  3. Look in at the Iglesia de San Ginés, the Recova market building and the shops on Calle Real, all in the historic center.
  4. Visit the Castillo de San José, home to the International Museum of Contemporary Art (about 60 minutes, open 11 a.m.–6 p.m.), then head back with time to spare.

6hours ashore

Volcanic tube and a Manrique lookout

  1. Book a shore-day tour that combines Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua, two sections of the same La Corona volcanic tube. Use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits your call.
  2. Cueva de los Verdes takes about 50 minutes and Jameos del Agua 60 to 120 minutes. Cueva de los Verdes tickets are timed and sold online.
  3. If time allows, Mirador del Río is about 45 minutes, with windows framing the cliffs and La Graciosa.
  4. Head back to Arrecife and leave a generous buffer before all-aboard.

8hours ashore

Timanfaya and Montañas del Fuego

  1. Book an island tour that includes the Montañas del Fuego in Timanfaya National Park. The Cabildo sells entry online for a set date and time, and lists the visit at about 90 minutes (the park's own page says about 45 minutes).
  2. The Ruta de los Volcanes is a bus ride of about 14 km from Islote de Hilario, included in admission. Stay with your tour group on the paths, since walking on the lava is not allowed.
  3. Check the tour length against your time ashore, and add the visit time to the drive time.
  4. Allow a long buffer for the ride back to the quay.

Ship tour or go independent?

Lanzarote's best sights are spread across the island, so a tour that handles the driving is a good way to see them. Booking your own gives you more choice, smaller groups and a pace you can set, and several attractions sell timed tickets that a tour will line up for you. The ship's own excursions suit very short calls or anyone who would rather leave the timing to the cruise line. Browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits your call.

  • Montañas del Fuego (Timanfaya) and Cueva de los Verdes tickets are sold online for a specific date and time, so pick a tour that already includes entry or book a slot that fits your call.
  • Distances from the quays to Timanfaya, Jameos del Agua and Mirador del Río are not published by the official sources, so ask the tour operator for the drive time and allow a generous buffer for the return.
  • Arrecife has new cruise terminals at both the Naos and Los Mármoles quays, so check which quay your ship uses and where your tour meets.
  • Ticket purchases for Cabildo centers are final, with no changes or refunds, so confirm your sailing times before you buy.

Official advisoryUS State Dept: Level 2 — Exercise increased caution (issued August 1, 2026; the page footer reads last updated August 11, 2025)

  • The advisory cites terrorism and unrest. Attacks could happen with little or no warning, and tourist sites and transportation hubs are named as possible targets.
  • Demonstrations are common in Spain, so avoid large crowds.
  • The advisory's Reconsider Travel note covers Ceuta, which is far from Lanzarote.
  • At Timanfaya, stay on marked paths and do not walk on lava beds or volcanic material, and pets are not allowed.

From official government and port sources. Check the latest advisory before you travel.

Accessibility

At the pier
Ships dock at the quay rather than tendering, and two new terminals, one at Naos and one at Los Mármoles, were announced as opened in 2025. No official source describes step-free routes at the quays.
  • The Mancha Blanca Visitor Centre at Timanfaya has access facilities for people with disabilities, according to the park's leaflet.
  • Cabildo centers offer reduced rates for people with disabilities, claimed at the ticket office with the required documents. The centers' pages give no details on wheelchair access, so email info@centrosturisticos.com to ask.
  • The Ruta de los Volcanes is a bus ride, so most of the Timanfaya visit does not require walking on the lava.

FAQ

Arrecife cruise port FAQ

Where do cruise ships dock in Arrecife?

Ships dock at the quay rather than tendering. The Autoridad Portuaria de Las Palmas and Global Ports opened two new cruise terminals, at Naos and Los Mármoles, in 2025, and the Los Mármoles terminal can serve up to three ships at once. Check with your cruise line which quay your ship will use. Spain's tourism board lists the port at Muelle de Los Mármoles, about 4 km from the city center.

How do I get from the port to Arrecife?

Spain's tourism board lists city bus line 03 at the port and gives the distance from Los Mármoles to the center as about 4 km. Taxis serve the port too. No official fare or walking time was found, so ask the driver for a price before you ride.

Do I need to book Timanfaya in advance?

Yes. The Cabildo sells Montañas del Fuego tickets online only, for a set date and time (€30 for adults, children 0–6 free). A tour that includes entry takes care of it, so browse the tours and use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits.

Can I walk on the lava at Timanfaya?

No. The park's rules ask visitors to stay on marked paths and not to walk on lava beds. The Ruta de los Volcanes is a bus ride of about 14 km, included in admission.

Are the Cabildo's attractions open every day?

The rates page lists Montañas del Fuego, Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes, Mirador del Río and the Castillo de San José as open daily, and says the centers are open 365 days a year. Hours differ by site, so check the times before you plan.

Can I visit the César Manrique Foundation on a port day?

It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with the ticket counter closing at 5 p.m., and a standard ticket is €10. It is in Tahíche, and no official source gives the travel time from the port, so ask your tour operator.

Is Spain safe for cruise visitors?

The US State Department rates Spain Level 2, exercise increased caution, because of terrorism and unrest. The advisory was issued August 1, 2026, though the page footer shows August 11, 2025. Stay aware in crowds and at tourist sites.
