Ship tour or go independent?

Harvest Caye is Norwegian Cruise Line's private island destination in southern Belize. Everything bookable here, from zip lines and cabanas to trips to the mainland, is sold by NCL as a shore excursion, so there is no independent tour scene to book. You can still have a full day on your own with the beach, the pool, the Nature Center and the shopping village. • Excursion prices vary by ship and sail date. NCL lets you change or cancel without penalty up to 48 hours before you reach port, unless the tour says otherwise.
• Mainland trips begin with a boat ride of about 40 minutes each way, so they take a good share of the day. Pick one that fits your time ashore.
• The river tubing site doesn't take credit cards, so carry some cash.
• The spice farm trip asks you to sign a waiver.
• Most mainland trips run 5 to 6 hours, so check your all-aboard time before you book.

Getting around

• WalkShips tie up at the island's pier, so you walk off the ship. The beach, pool, Nature Center and shopping village are all on the island.
• FerryMainland trips leave by boat from the Harvest Caye marina. Most cross in about 40 minutes to Malacate Pier, then continue by air-conditioned bus. These transfers are part of NCL's excursions.

Money

Belize's currency is the Belize dollar, but NCL says US dollars are widely accepted. Bring some cash: the river tubing site on the mainland doesn't take cards.

Safety & scams

• The State Department's Level 3 warning covers Southside Belize City, not southern Belize.
• The UK government lists Placencia among tourist spots where theft of cash, cards and phones happens, so keep valuables close on mainland trips.

Accessibility

At the pier

Ships dock at the island's own pier, so there is no tender. NCL calls it the only pier in Belize for large cruise ships.

• NCL sells wheelchair-accessible beach villas for up to 6 guests, with a ramp, wide doorways, a beach wheelchair and a private restroom. NCL asks that only full-time wheelchair users book them.
• Several NCL options here are rated activity level 1 (easy) by NCL, including the lagoon wildlife launch, the parasail, the pool cabana and the villas.
• The Flighthouse zip line is rated activity level 3.
