Plan

Plan your day

Pick the plan that matches your time ashore, then check how far things are from the pier.

4hours ashore

Reef and beach near the pier

  1. Check which pier your ship uses. Carnival and Princess dock at Isla Tropicale; Royal Caribbean generally docks at the Port of Roatán in Coxen Hole.
  2. At Isla Tropicale, ride the scenic chairlift, swim at the beach or pool, or kayak along the shore.
  3. From Coxen Hole, take a pre-arranged taxi to West End for calm water and a reef close to shore. The tourism board calls it a few minutes' ride.
  4. Leave plenty of time to get back to the pier.

6hours ashore

West End and West Bay

  1. Head to West End, a beach village with dive shops, restaurants and a reef near the sand.
  2. Ride about 3.5 km south to West Bay Beach for white sand, snorkeling and glass-bottom boats.
  3. Try a baleada or a bowl of coconut conch soup for lunch.
  4. Book your ride back ahead of time, and agree on the fare before you get in.

Monkeys, macaws and a long beach afternoon

  1. Ride 30–40 minutes to Gumbalimba Park in West Bay for white-faced monkeys, scarlet macaws, a zipline and the Pirate Museum Cave.
  2. Spend the afternoon on the white sand of West Bay Beach.
  3. Or visit Punta Gorda, a mostly Garifuna fishing village, or Arch's Iguana and Marine Park instead.
  4. Bring cash for Gumbalimba. There is no ATM on site.

Ship tour or go independent?

Going on your own works, but plan it. West Bay is about a 30–40 minute drive from either pier, and Gumbalimba Park sells its own shuttle from the cruise port. Canada suggests cruise passengers book tours through a reputable company, and both the US and Canada warn against flagging taxis in the street.

  • Don't flag taxis in the street or take one from a taxi stand. Pre-book a ride, agree on the fare first, and note the driver's name and plate.
  • Don't use shared taxis.
  • Know which pier you're at. Isla Tropicale and the Coxen Hole pier are separate ports, so tell your driver which one.
  • The US says tourism in Honduras is not well regulated, with rare safety checks on gear. Research tour providers before you book.
  • Gumbalimba Park has no ATM. Bring cash.

Getting around

Getting around & money

Getting around

No rideshare

  • WalkAt Coxen Hole, the port area has shops and visitor services, but West Bay is too far to walk. At Isla Tropicale, the beach, pool, restaurants and bars are inside the port, and a scenic chairlift runs there.
  • TaxiTo reach West End or West Bay, use a taxi company your hotel or tour operator recommends, not a white street taxi or a taxi stand. Agree on the fare first and carry small bills. No official fare list is published.
  • ShuttleGumbalimba Park runs a bookable shuttle from the cruise port with set pickup times and a return ride. It names both Mahogany Bay and the Port of Roatán.

Uber lists only Tegucigalpa among Honduran cities, not Roatán. Plan on a pre-booked taxi, a shuttle or a tour.

Money, tipping & phones

Money
The Honduran lempira (HNL) is the official currency. US dollars are easy to exchange, and credit cards are accepted on Roatán. ATMs can be out of order, charge high fees or draw thieves, so use one in a mall or bank, avoid large withdrawals and skip ATMs at night.

Good to know

Safety & accessibility

Safety & scams

Official advisoryUS State Dept: Level 3 — Reconsider travel (as of August 25, 2026)

  • The US Level 3 covers all of Honduras, including the Bay Islands, with no separate safety note for Roatán. The only Do Not Travel area is Gracias a Dios, on the mainland.
  • Canada and the UK call the Bay Islands generally safer than the mainland, with less violent crime. Petty theft is still a problem in tourist areas.
  • Canada says to stay out of the Coxen Hole, Los Fuertes and Suampo neighborhoods once it's dark, and to avoid isolated beaches and areas. Assaults on beaches have mostly happened at night.
  • Don't flag taxis in the street, use taxi stands or ride in white street taxis. Use a company your hotel recommends, and don't share a cab with strangers.
  • Book tours, diving and water sports with well-established companies. Riptides are common, and not every beach has a lifeguard.
  • Tap water is not safe to drink. Use bottled water.
  • Dengue is a risk. Use insect repellent; the mosquitoes bite mostly by day, especially around sunrise and sunset.
  • Roatán has a recompression chamber for divers, but other emergency care on the islands is very limited.
  • In an emergency, dial 911. Roatán has tourist police.

From official government and port sources. Check the latest advisory before you travel.

Accessibility

At the pier
Ships dock at both piers, so there is no tender. Neither port publishes step-free or wheelchair details.
  • Isla Tropicale has a scenic chairlift.
  • Gumbalimba Park suggests allowing extra time if you use a golf cart there, since there may be a wait.
  • Emergency medical care on the Bay Islands is very limited. Serious cases may need evacuation.

FAQ

Roatán cruise port FAQ

Where do cruise ships dock in Roatán?

There are two piers. Carnival and Princess dock at Isla Tropicale, formerly Mahogany Bay. Royal Caribbean generally docks at the Port of Roatán in Coxen Hole, farther west. Both are docked piers, not tenders. Lines can change ports, so check your itinerary.

Is Mahogany Bay the same as Isla Tropicale?

Yes. Carnival now calls its Roatán port Isla Tropicale. It built on the Mahogany Bay port and added a pool with a swim-up bar.

Can I walk to town from the ship?

At Coxen Hole, the pier is in town and the port area has shops. West Bay is too far to walk. From Isla Tropicale, you stay in the port area or take a taxi or tour to go farther.

How far is West Bay Beach from the cruise port?

Gumbalimba Park, in West Bay, says it's about a 30–40 minute drive from both cruise piers. The tourism board says West End is a few minutes by taxi from Coxen Hole.

Is Roatán safe for cruise passengers?

The US rates all of Honduras Level 3, Reconsider travel. Canada and the UK say the Bay Islands are generally safer than the mainland, with petty theft the main issue. Book rides and tours through reputable companies and don't flag street taxis.

Do I need lempiras, or can I use US dollars?

The lempira is the official currency. US dollars are easy to exchange, and credit cards are accepted on Roatán. Bring small bills for taxis and cash for places like Gumbalimba, which has no ATM.

How long do cruise passengers usually get ashore?

A Honduran Tourism Institute survey from late 2022 found cruise visitors spent about 4.6 hours ashore at the Port of Roatán and 4.8 hours at Mahogany Bay on average.
