Ship tour or go independent?

Hakodate suits an independent day. From Wakamatsu Wharf, the morning market is listed at about 5 minutes on foot, and the other main sights are listed at 10 to 15 minutes by car. Booking your own tour gives you more choice, smaller groups and a pace you set, and a guide can link the market, the ropeway and Motomachi without you working out the rides. The ship's own excursions suit anyone who wants the cruise line to handle the timing. Browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits your call.

  • Check which wharf your ship uses. The city lists Nishi Wharf for ships under 30,000 gross tons, Wakamatsu for under 120,000 and Minato-cho for ships over 120,000, as a rough guide decided case by case. From Minato-cho, the tourism agency lists the morning market at 20 minutes by car, the ropeway station at 25 minutes and Motomachi at 25 minutes. From Nishi Wharf it lists the market at 10 minutes by car.
  • The city notes the inner harbor is calm for most of the year and that anchoring is possible, so ask your cruise line how your ship will arrive and get ashore.
  • The ropeway starts at 10:00 a.m., and the morning market closes at 2:00 p.m. Pick a tour or plan that fits both, and check the ropeway's maintenance dates.
  • The State Department notes that heavy snow in northern Japan can disrupt travel. Build in extra time on cold-season calls.
