Plan

Plan your day

Pick the plan that matches your time ashore, then check how far things are from the pier.

4hours ashore

Georgian Falmouth on foot

  1. Walk off the ship into the historic district. Falmouth has more Georgian buildings than anywhere else in Jamaica.
  2. Loop past Water Square, the courthouse (begun in 1815), the Baptist Manse on Market Street and St. Peter's Church. A guided walking or trolley tour adds the stories behind them.
  3. Browse crafts at the pier or the Artisan Village, where you can buy straight from the makers. On Wednesdays, look in on the Bend-Down Market, one of the island's biggest.
  4. Grab a jerk lunch or a patty, then head back with plenty of time before all-aboard.

6hours ashore

River morning, town afternoon

  1. Take a licensed taxi or a booked tour inland to the Martha Brae River. Bamboo rafts drift about three miles in roughly an hour.
  2. Confirm before you book that rafting is running. The Jamaica Tourist Board's reopening list still showed Rafting on the Martha Brae as closed when we checked.
  3. Back in Falmouth, walk the historic streets and the craft stalls near the pier.
  4. Leave a time cushion. Many ships here sail around 4 p.m.

8hours ashore

Good Hope adventure or a Montego Bay day

  1. Book a tour to Good Hope, about 20 minutes inland. Chukka runs rafting, tubing, ziplining, dune buggies and rum tasting there, with pickup from Falmouth. It is not on the tourism board's reopening list, so confirm it is running when you book.
  2. Or ride west to Montego Bay, about 45 minutes away. Tour Rose Hall Great House, then swim at Doctor's Cave Beach on the Hip Strip.
  3. Greenwood Great House was listed as closed in the tourism board's reopening list, so skip it for now.
  4. Head back early. The ship will not wait for late passengers.

Ship tour or go independent?

Falmouth's historic center is easy to see on your own, right from the pier. For anything farther out, a ship tour or a well-known operator with pickup at the port is the safer bet right now. Hurricane Melissa damage is still being repaired across western Jamaica, and some attractions are closed. Taxis are not metered, and no official fares are published, so agree on the price first.

  • The ship will not wait for late passengers, and the drive to Montego Bay takes about 45 minutes each way.
  • Some nearby attractions were still listed as closed after Hurricane Melissa, including Rafting on the Martha Brae, Greenwood Great House and River Rapids Adventure (a tubing stop on some Falmouth tours). Check with the operator before you book.
  • Taxis are not metered. Use licensed taxis only and agree on the fare before you get in.
  • Officials advise against isolated areas and deserted beaches, even by day.
  • The Luminous Lagoon glows only after dark, and boat tours leave at night, after most ships have sailed.

Getting around

Getting around & money

Getting around

Rideshare limited

  • WalkThe historic town sits right next to the pier, and the tourism agencies describe it as made for walking tours.
  • TaxiUse licensed taxis only. Look for red PPV or PP plates; tourist taxis also carry a lime-green JUTA sticker or a blue Jamaica Tourist Board sticker. Taxis are not metered and no official fares are published, so agree on the price before you go.
  • BusRoute taxis run fixed routes and coaster minibuses serve most towns; both are licensed by the Transport Authority. Knutsford Express runs air-conditioned coaches between major towns; book online. For a short port day, a tour or licensed taxi is simpler.
  • ShuttleSome tour operators pick guests up at the cruise port, including the trolley used for Falmouth walking tours. Chukka offers pickup in Falmouth for its Good Hope tours.

Uber works in some parts of Jamaica, including Kingston. We found no official word on rideshare at the Falmouth pier, so plan on a licensed taxi or a tour.

Money, tipping & phones

Money
The Jamaican dollar (JMD) is the local currency, and exchange rates change daily. Major credit cards work at hotels and businesses that serve tourists. Most ATMs take cards with Visa, Mastercard, Cirrus or Plus logos, but Canada notes ATMs are limited outside Kingston and Montego Bay, so carry some cash.
Phones
International phone service works across the island and Wi-Fi is widely available. Check with your carrier about a roaming plan before you sail.

Safety & accessibility

Safety & scams

Official advisoryUS State Dept: Level 2 — Exercise increased caution (as of June 23, 2026)

  • The US advisory cites crime and health risks. It names no areas of Trelawny, where Falmouth is. In St. James Parish (Montego Bay) it says to reconsider travel to Salt Spring, Flankers, Rose Heights, the Hart Street area, Norwood and Mount Salem.
  • The UK also urges care in parts of Montego Bay: Flankers, Barrett Town, Glendevon, Rose Heights and Mount Salem.
  • Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica in October 2025 and badly damaged all the western parishes. The UK says some communities still lack power and piped water, and health care is limited in the worst-hit areas.
  • Tourist areas are less affected by violent crime, but robbery happens. Don't show valuables, avoid deserted beaches, and don't resist if robbed.
  • Use licensed taxis or reputable tour operators, and agree on taxi fares first.
  • Riptides are common and not all beaches have lifeguards. Swim only in marked areas.
  • Ganja laws are strict: small amounts bring a fine, smoking in public is banned, and taking any across a border carries severe penalties.
  • Police: dial 119.

Accessibility

At the pier
Ships dock alongside the pier, so there is no tender. The port authority does not publish wheelchair or step-free details.
  • Rafts at the Martha Brae board from a concrete pier with a dispatcher. The tourism board does not say whether rafting suits wheelchair users.
  • Ask your tour operator about step-free vehicles before you book.
