Ship tour or go independent?

Going on your own is easy here. Bridgetown and the nearest beach are within walking distance, authorized taxis are dispatched at the terminal exit, and public buses cost a flat BBD 3.50. Ship tours make more sense for longer island days if you want a guaranteed return.

  • The ship will not wait for late passengers, so build in a time cushion.
  • Taxis have no meters. Agree on the fare first, and confirm whether it is per person or per trip and in Barbados or US dollars.
  • Weekday morning and late-afternoon rush hours around Bridgetown can slow your return.
  • Transport Board buses need the exact fare in cash, and no change is given.
  • Harrison's Cave and St. Nicholas Abbey are not open every day. Check before you go.
  • Swimming is not advised at many east-coast beaches.

Rideshare limited

  • ShuttleThe port runs a free, optional shuttle between the ship and the cruise terminal, depending on where your ship berths.
  • WalkLeave by the main gate and follow Trevor's Way, a seaside footpath, into Bridgetown in about 20 minutes. Brownes Beach is a short walk past the city center.
  • TaxiGovernment-set, agree fare firstAbout 255 authorized seaport taxis, marked with a colored sticker, use a dispatch stand at the terminal exit. Taxis have no meters. Fares are set by the government and published in Barbados dollars, but drivers may quote in US dollars, so agree on the price and currency before you ride. Many drivers also offer island tours for one flat rate.
  • BusBBD 3.50 per trip (buses and minibuses)Barbados Transport Board buses and privately run yellow minibuses with a blue stripe charge the same fare. ZR vans (white with a maroon stripe) run numbered routes. On Transport Board buses, put the exact fare in cash in the farebox; no change is given.

Canada's travel advice says ride-hailing apps work in Barbados, but the port has its own dispatch stand for authorized seaport taxis at the terminal exit. Plan on that stand rather than an app pickup.

Money, tipping & phones

Money

  • Pickpocketing and purse snatching happen in popular tourist areas. Keep valuables out of sight and don't leave bags alone on the beach.
  • Avoid walking alone at night and in isolated or poorly lit areas.
  • Currents can be strong even on south and west coast beaches, and not every beach has lifeguards or warning flags. Swimming is not advised at many east-coast beaches.

  • Hurricane season runs June to November, with peak activity from August to October.
  • In an emergency, dial 211 for police and 511 for an ambulance.
