Plan

Plan your day

Pick the plan that matches your time ashore, then check how far things are from the pier.

4hours ashore

Market, cathedral and the waterfront

  1. Start at the Papeete Market, a covered market in the city center. Look for pua'a roti (roast pork), firi firi (Tahitian donuts), raw fish in coconut milk and fresh fruit.
  2. Walk to Notre-Dame Cathedral, which marks kilometer zero, the point every distance on the island is measured from. Its listed opening hours are short and early, so treat it as a look from the outside if you arrive later.
  3. Stroll the seafront promenade toward Paofai Gardens and Place To'ata.
  4. Leave plenty of time to get back to the terminal before all aboard.

6hours ashore

Papeete plus the Museum of Tahiti

  1. Spend the morning at the market and the cathedral.
  2. Visit the Museum of Tahiti and the Islands. Entry is 1,000 XPF, and it opens Wednesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check its location and your travel time first.
  3. Or browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter to find a half-day island or lagoon outing that fits your call.

8hours ashore

Around the island, or over to Moorea

  1. A guided island tour is the easy way to see the waterfalls, black-sand beaches and viewpoints on the circuit around Tahiti. Tahiti Tourisme describes the loop as a one-day outing.
  2. Moorea is a ferry ride away. Tahiti Tourisme gives the crossing as about 30 minutes. Many cruisers prefer a Moorea tour that handles the ferry and the day for them.
  3. Browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter. Pick one that finishes well before all aboard, and be aware that no source we checked publishes tour times.

Ship tour or go independent?

Papeete suits an independent day. The ship berths at a terminal on Papeete's waterfront, with the market, cathedral and promenade in the town center. Booking your own tour gives you more choice, smaller groups and a pace you set, and it opens up the island's waterfalls, beaches and Moorea. The ship's excursions are a fine pick if you would rather leave the timing to the cruise line. Browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits your call.

  • Papeete can berth up to four cruise ships at once, so busy days may mean more people at the terminal and the market.
  • Tahiti Tourisme's opening hours for the market, terminal and cathedral are flagged as unconfirmed. Check the day you go.
  • Tahiti Tourisme's Arahoho blowhole listing carries a closure notice for cliff work. If a tour includes it, ask whether it is open.
  • Pick a tour that returns well before all aboard, especially for a day trip to Moorea that depends on a ferry.
