Messina in a nutshell

Worth getting off?

Research verdictDepends what you like

Messina has a cathedral with a famous astronomical clock, and MedCruise's port data puts the port in the city centre. Most people come for Taormina or Mount Etna, which are separate trips, so how you plan the day matters more than the town itself.

Best time to go

Messina had 227 ship calls and 617,477 passengers in 2024, according to the port's data on the MedCruise site. No official page we read gives the months of the season.

Plan

Plan your day

Pick the plan that matches your time ashore, then check how far things are from the pier.

4hours ashore

Cathedral and the noon clock show

  1. Head to Piazza Duomo, in the centre of Messina, and time your visit for noon, when the clock's main show runs every day for just under 15 minutes.
  2. Look at the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, consecrated in 1197, nearly destroyed in the 1908 earthquake and set on fire in the 1943 bombing.
  3. Stop at the Largo Minutoli welcome point, where local tour operators set up, if you want to ask about options.
  4. Leave plenty of time to get back to the ship.

6hours ashore

Bell tower climb and a slow walk through town

  1. Climb the 200 steps of the bell tower, which pass behind the clock mechanism to about 60 meters above the square. Going up at noon lets you watch the figures move.
  2. Look inside the cathedral, which holds a 14th-century mosaic of the Madonna and a statue of St. John the Baptist by Gagini.
  3. Check the official Messina visitor site for bell tower tickets and hours before you go; the tourism pages we read do not list them.
  4. Keep the afternoon loose and head back to the pier early.

8hours ashore

Taormina with a tour that handles the transport

  1. Taormina and Mount Etna are not in Messina. We found no official source that publishes the travel time from the Messina cruise pier to either one, so check the length of any tour before you book.
  2. A guided Taormina tour usually covers the Ancient Theatre, which is open daily 9:00-19:45 (last entry 19:00) according to the park's own page, and the town's old streets. Browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits your call.
  3. Isola Bella, the small islet below Taormina: the archaeological park announced it would reopen on June 20, 2026. Check the park site for current hours and tickets.
  4. Etna's cable car starts at Rifugio Sapienza in Nicolosi (Etna South), on the other side of the mountain from Messina. Pick an Etna tour that states its full length and fits your time ashore.

Ship tour or go independent?

In Messina itself the cathedral and clock are an easy independent stop. For Taormina or Etna, booking your own tour gives you more choice, often smaller groups and your own pace, and a good tour handles the transport for you. The ship's excursions are a fair pick if you want the cruise line to manage the timing. Browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits your call.

  • Taormina and Etna are separate trips, and we found no official travel time from the pier. Pick a tour that states its full length and leaves room before all-aboard.
  • The noon clock show is a fixed time, so plan your morning around it.
  • Interbus's Messina page publishes no schedule, fare or boarding point. Check its timetable search on the day if you go by bus.
  • Volcanic activity can disrupt travel in Sicily, according to the US State Department.
