Ship tour or go independent?

Kotor is easy to do on your own because the Old Town is right by the port. Booking your own boat trip, walking tour or Lovćen day gives you more choice, often smaller groups, and your own pace. The ship's tours are a good fit if you would rather leave the timing to the cruise line, and they can be handy if your ship is at anchor. Browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter to find one that fits your call.

  • The port has anchorage positions and its berthing policy plans room for tenders, so a call may be at anchor rather than at the berth. If yours is, plan for tender lines and allow extra time to get back to the ship.
  • Choose a boat trip or mountain tour with a length that leaves a comfortable cushion before all-aboard; Perast is about 12 km from Kotor, a 15-minute drive.
  • The fortress is reached by a stone path and narrow steps, so start early if you want to do it and still see the Old Town.

Safety & scams

Official advisoryUS State Dept: Level 1 — Exercise normal precautions (issued August 27, 2026)

  • The State Department suggests enrolling in its STEP program and buying travel insurance, with supplemental cover for medical evacuation.
  • The tourism organisation says sunbathing between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. is not recommended, and advises swimming only within designated shoreline zones.

From official government and port sources. Check the latest advisory before you travel.

Accessibility

At the pier
Where a ship uses the port's cruise berth it docks alongside. The sources we checked publish no accessibility details for the berth.
Tender
A ship can anchor in the bay; the port's berthing policy plans space for tender landings. Ask your cruise line how its tender service handles wheelchairs and limited mobility.
  • The fortress is reached by a stone path and narrow steps, and the Lovćen Mausoleum needs 461 steps. The Old Town itself is the easiest part of the day.

FAQ

Kotor cruise port FAQ

Do ships dock or tender at Kotor?

It depends on the ship. The port has a cruise berth and three anchorage positions, and its berthing policy plans space for tenders to land, so a ship may anchor and tender in. Your cruise line will tell you which applies to your call.

Can I walk from the ship to the Old Town?

Yes, if your ship uses the port's cruise berth. The port puts the Old Town about 100 m away, but it does not publish a walking time. If your ship anchors, add time for the tender.

Are there limits on cruise ships in Kotor?

We found no official daily cap. In 2025 the UNESCO World Heritage Committee listed alternative solutions to cruise ships docking in the bay among the issues Montenegro's revised management plan should address. The port posts a yearly list of arrivals.

Is there a fortress ticket price?

We could not confirm a price from an official source, so we do not list one. Check at the entrance. If you would rather skip the climb, a boat trip or Lovćen tour is a good way to fill the day; browse the tours below.

What currency do I need?

The euro is the official means of payment. Cards are widely accepted and ATMs are available in all cities.

How do I get to Perast or Lovćen?

Perast is about 12 km and a 15-minute drive from Kotor, and Lovćen National Park can be reached by driving from Kotor. A boat trip or a tour handles the transport; use the time-ashore filter to pick one that fits your call.

Is Kotor safe for cruise visitors?

The US State Department rates Montenegro Level 1, its lowest advisory level, and calls it generally safe. Wildfire risk in July and August is the main seasonal note.
