Kochi in a nutshell

Worth getting off?

Research verdictGet off the ship

The ship berths at Kochi Port, about 30 minutes by car from central Kochi, so this is a ride-in port. The reward is Kochi Castle, one of Japan's few surviving original castles, and a lively food market a short walk away.

Plan

Plan your day

Pick the plan that matches your time ashore, then check how far things are from the pier.

4hours ashore

Castle and a seafood lunch

  1. Plan on about 30 minutes each way between the wharf and the castle area, by taxi or shuttle bus, per the port data sheet. That leaves a short window in town, so keep to one area.
  2. Visit Kochi Castle. The keep opens 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with last entry at 4:30 p.m., and adult entry is ¥500.
  3. Walk to Hirome Market, a short walk from the castle, for seared bonito and other stall food.
  4. On a short call a ship excursion is a simple way to handle the timing. Independent tours with a half-day length are worth browsing below; use the time-ashore filter.

6hours ashore

Castle, market and a slower pace

  1. Ride to Kochi Castle (about 30 minutes by car) and take your time in the keep. Its stairs are steep, so go carefully.
  2. A combined ticket covers the castle sites and the Kochi Castle Museum of History next door.
  3. Eat at Hirome Market. Most stalls take cash, so carry yen.
  4. Day pass holders can ride the Tosaden streetcar around the central zone; the pass is ¥500 for adults. Ride back to the wharf by taxi or shuttle, which is about 30 minutes.
  5. A small-group Kochi city or food tour can pack in more with less planning. Browse the tours below and filter by time ashore.

8hours ashore

City sights, then the coast

  1. Start at Kochi Castle and Hirome Market as above.
  2. An older prefecture page lists Katsurahama Beach about 10 minutes by car from the port. A private or small-group tour that links the castle and the coast is worth a look below.
  3. Leave margin for the 30-minute return ride and your all-aboard time.

Ship tour or go independent?

Kochi suits an independent day if you book your own transport or a tour. The wharves are about 30 minutes by car from the city and the port data sheet lists no public transport, only taxis or shuttle buses. A small-group or private tour gives you a set plan, a local guide and a pace you choose, and it takes the transfer question off your list. The ship's own excursions are a fair pick if you want the cruise line to handle timing and transport. Browse the tours below and use the time-ashore filter to match your call.

  • Allow for the transfer. Japan's tourism agency lists about 30 minutes by car from the wharves to central Kochi, and no public transport from the port. Pick a tour or a ride plan that works backward from your all-aboard time.
  • Check which wharf your ship uses. The tourism agency lists Misato wharves 7-1 through 7-4, and its facility sheet covers 7-2, 7-3 and 7-4.
  • Carry cash. Hirome Market stalls generally do not take credit cards, per Kochi's tourism site.
