Plan

Plan your day

Pick the plan that matches your time ashore, then check how far things are from the pier.

4hours ashore

Old Town on foot

  1. Start at Mallory Square, the plaza at the end of Old Town. Mel Fisher's Maritime Museum and the Key West Aquarium are both listed there.
  2. Visit the Truman Little White House at 111 Front Street. You see it on a guided tour.
  3. Walk Duval Street for live music and try a slice of key lime pie.
  4. Head back with time to spare. The ship will not wait.

6hours ashore

Hemingway, the lighthouse and the southernmost buoy

  1. Walk or take a Key West Rides shuttle to the Ernest Hemingway Home. Guided tours of 20–30 minutes leave every 15 minutes, and some of the resident cats descend from Hemingway's six-toed cat.
  2. Climb the 88 steps of the Key West Lighthouse at 938 Whitehead Street.
  3. Take a photo at the Southernmost Point buoy. While seawall and road repairs go on, a temporary buoy stands at 1499 Duval Street.
  4. Try fresh local fish or a Cuban coffee on the way back through town.

Beach day at Fort Zachary Taylor, or a seaplane to Dry Tortugas

  1. Spend the day at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park. Guides explain its part in the Civil War and Spanish-American War, and the beach is good for swimming and snorkeling. Entry on foot is $2.50, and the chickee hut rents chairs, umbrellas and snorkel gear.
  2. Or book a half-day seaplane trip to Dry Tortugas National Park, almost 70 miles west. It takes about 4 hours in all, with at least 2.5 hours at the park.
  3. Skip the Dry Tortugas ferry unless your ship stays into the evening. It leaves at 8 a.m. and gets back about 5:15 p.m.
  4. The Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square starts about two hours before sunset, and ships don't sit at the dock during sunset, so check your all-aboard time before planning on it.

Ship tour or go independent?

Going on your own is straightforward. Key West is one of the easiest places in the Keys to see without a car, the city's Key West Rides shuttle covers the island, and walking, biking, pedicabs, taxis and rideshare are all popular. Trolley tours, the Conch Train and morning snorkel trips can be booked through the ship or directly. Dry Tortugas is the one trip where timing is tight.

  • The Dry Tortugas ferry day runs from a 7 a.m. check-in to a 5:15 p.m. return, which doesn't fit most port calls. The half-day seaplane is the realistic option.
  • Dry Tortugas has no food or water, so bring your own (the ferry includes lunch). Seas can be rough.
  • The Duval Loop bus was suspended in January 2026. Key West Rides, an app-booked shuttle at $2 a ride, now serves its stops.
  • City buses can run late in the busy season because of traffic.
  • If your ship docks at the Outer Mole rather than Pier B or Mallory, plan on a shuttle to reach Duval Street.

Good to know

Safety & accessibility

Safety & scams

  • Check the National Weather Service Key West office for rip current statements and small craft advisories before you swim or take a boat trip.
  • Higher tides can flood low-lying streets with salt water; the NWS issues coastal flood statements when that happens.
  • If a hurricane threatens, the county tourism council and Monroe County Emergency Management help visitors leave the Keys safely. You can sign up for Alert!Monroe emergency alerts.
  • At Dry Tortugas you must bring your own food and water, and conditions are primitive. Be ready for rough seas.
  • Sea turtles nest on Key West's Atlantic beaches from March through October. Leave nests and hatchlings alone.

From official government and port sources. Check the latest advisory before you travel.

Accessibility

At the pier
Ships dock, so there is no tender. The city's port page gives no step-free or wheelchair details for the piers.
  • The city bus fleet includes 20 wheelchair-accessible buses. On Key West Rides, tap the wheelchair icon in the app before you request a ride.
  • The city transit department also lists a paratransit service.

  • The Truman Little White House asks visitors who need accommodations to tell staff ahead of time; a tour script is available on request.

FAQ

Key West cruise port FAQ

Where do cruise ships dock in Key West?

Key West has three cruise docks: Pier B (privately owned), the city's Mallory Square Dock, and the Navy Mole, also called the Outer Mole. Since 2022 the city's stated policy has been to send cruise ships to Pier B and not to dock a ship at a city pier while one is at Pier B. Your cruise line confirms the pier.

Can I walk from the ship to Duval Street?

Yes. Pier B and Mallory Square are an easy walk from town. If you dock at the Outer Mole, take a shuttle.

Is the free Duval Loop bus still running?

No. The city started charging $1 for it in 2025, and it was suspended in January 2026. Its stops are now served by Key West Rides, an app-booked shuttle that costs $2 a ride and runs 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Can I visit Dry Tortugas on a cruise stop?

Only if your timing works. The ferry leaves at 8 a.m. and gets back about 5:15 p.m., too long for most calls. A half-day seaplane trip takes about 4 hours with at least 2.5 hours at the park, and reservations are required. The seaplane collects the $15 park entrance fee before takeoff; ferry tickets include it.

How much does it cost to get into Fort Zachary Taylor?

Walk-ins and cyclists pay $2.50. The park is open 8 a.m. to sundown, and the fort itself closes at 5 p.m.

Will I see the sunset celebration at Mallory Square?

Probably not on a normal port day. The celebration starts about two hours before sunset, and the county tourism office says cruise ships aren't docked there during sunset.

Can I use Uber or Lyft in Key West?

The county tourism office lists rideshare as a popular way to get around, along with taxis, pedicabs, biking and walking.
