Ship tour or go independent?

You need wheels in Freeport, since nothing much is walkable from the harbour. Taxis work well for Port Lucaya, Garden of the Groves and the nearer beaches. For Lucayan National Park, snorkeling or a boat to Peterson Cay, a booked tour is simpler. Check any water-sports operator's credentials first.

  • The cruise harbour is in an industrial area on the west side of Freeport, so plan a ride for every stop.
  • Lucayan National Park is about 25 miles east, and its listed opening hours are weekends only.
  • Canada says taxis do not use meters and charge set zone fares; agree the price before you set off.
  • Water sports are poorly regulated. Some operators are unlicensed or uninsured, and jet ski operators have been linked to sexual assaults.
  • Peterson Cay can only be reached by boat.

Getting around

Getting around & money

Getting around

No rideshare

  • TaxiTaxis are the main way to get around. They wait at hotels, the airport and Port Lucaya Marketplace. Fares are set by government zone, and the cruise harbour is its own zone. Use marked taxis with TN on yellow plates, and agree the fare before you ride. Taxis can also be hired by the hour.
  • BusJitneys (local minibuses) run in Freeport during the day, roughly from early morning until about sunset. Fares depend on the route; pay with exact change at marked stops.

The Grand Bahama tourism board lists taxis, buses, car and scooter rentals and bikes, but no ride-hailing apps. Plan on taxis or a booked tour.

Money, tipping & phones

Money
The Bahamian dollar is pegged to the US dollar and both are accepted everywhere, so you do not need to change money. Grand Bahama has ATMs in banks.
Tipping
About 15% for waiters and taxi drivers, and $1 a bag for porters. Many places add a gratuity to the bill, so check before you tip.
Phones
US plugs and chargers work without an adapter (120V, 60Hz). BTC has roaming deals with many carriers; check rates with your own carrier before you go.
