Ship tour or go independent?

Willemstad is easy on your own: downtown is a few minutes' walk from the pier. Beaches and parks outside town are spread out, so for far spots like Christoffel Park a ship or booked tour takes the guesswork out of buses and unmetered taxis.

  • Taxis are not metered. Agree on the price before you get in.
  • Bus times are scheduled times, not live. Check the ABC app or schedule before you rely on a bus back.
  • The Queen Emma Bridge swings open for ships, and the Ports Authority is upgrading it (Sept 2026). A free ferry carries people across while it is open.

  • FerryFreeWhen the Queen Emma Bridge swings open to let ships through, a small ferry (the ponchi) carries people between Punda and Otrobanda.

    ANG 2.00
West side to Westpunt (ABC, in ANG)
    ANG 2.50

The Curaçao Tourist Board lists taxis, buses, hotel shuttles and rental cars, and no rideshare apps. Plan on a taxi or the bus.

Money, tipping & phones

Money
Curaçao now uses the Caribbean guilder (Cg, code XCG). It replaced the Netherlands Antillean guilder (ANG) one to one on March 31, 2025, and ANG stopped being legal tender after June 30, 2025. Leftover ANG can be swapped at the central bank until March 31, 2055. The official rate is 1.79 Cg to the US dollar; commercial transactions use 1.82. ABC buses take US dollars as well as guilders.
Tipping
Restaurants usually add a service charge of about 10% to the bill, and that is not a tip. Tipping is up to you: about 10% for taxi drivers, 5–10% for waiters, and 1 Cg per bag for porters.
